FSSAI operationalizes certain provisions of Draft Alcoholic Beverages Regulation w.e.f 22-06-2020

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) vide a directive dated 22nd June has operationalizes certain provisions of 2 draft amendments namely Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations, 2020 and Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additive) Amendment Regulations, 2020.

 FSSAI has proposed amendments and published draft of the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations, 2020 and Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additive) Amendment Regulations, 2020. The Apex Regulator has also invited objections and suggestion. However, keeping in mind the need of certain technical provisions available in the said draft amendments relating to alcohol free beer and use of food colour in distilled spiritous beverages, FSSAI decides to operationalize those provisions with immediate effective from 22nd June 2020. The provisions which are effective from now are as follows-

  1. Alcohol free beer shall comply with the limits specified for regular beer.
  2. In the food category- distilled spiritous beverages, the following food additives and colours are added with maximum recommended levels. The colours are permitted to be used in distilled spiritous beverages individually or in combination. However, the colours are not permitted to use in country liquor.
