The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India vide a directive dated 18th June 2020 has directed the FBOs (food business operators) that the timeline for compliance with FSSAI Regulation on prohibition of non-iodized salt/common salt is extended till 1st January 2021.
FSSAI on Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on sales) Second Amendment Regulations, 2019 provided that no person shall sell common salt for direct human consumption or for use as an ingredient in a food product unless the same is iodized. However, common salt may be sold for iron fortification/ animal use/ preservation not meant for direct consumption/ for infant food products/manufacturing medicines and industrial use with proper label declarations.
But several representations have been received at FSSAI requesting for extension of timeline for compliance on account of technical issues. On that matter, vide a direction dated 22nd August 2019 the timeline for compliance was extended till 1st July 2020.
However, FSSAI is receiving representations for further extension of timeline due to COVID-19 lockdown. So, with this current directive dated 18th June 2020, FSSAI extended the timeline for compliance of the same till 1st January 2021.
