The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) vide an order dated 24th February 2020 has directed that it is mandatory for all sweet shops to display the “Date of manufacturing” or “Best Before Date” of non-packaged sweets at their display counters from 1st June 2020. FSSAI has issued the direction after reports of instances of sale of stale/expired sweets to consumers posing potential health hazardous. At present, these details are mandatory to be printed in the labels of pre-packaged/pre-packed sweets as per the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011.
So, as per this direction, in every outlet; the non-packaged or loose sweets, the container/tray holding sweet should display the “Date of manufacturing” or “Best Before Date”.
FSSAI also said that food business operators (FBOs) should decide and display the ‘Best before Date’ of sweets depending upon the nature of the product and local conditions. For proper decision making, the FBOs may refer to the indicative list of shelf life of different kind of sweets which is available on FSSAI Website.
This order also directs the Food Safety Commissioners of States and Union Territories to ensure compliance to these directions.
