FSSAI extends time for modification of licence to comply with “Formulated Supplement for Children” standard

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) vide a directive dated 21st February 2020 has issued a direction regarding extension of time period for modification of licence to comply with standards of formulated supplements for children.

FSSAI previously vide a directive dated 18th October 2019 specified the standards of complementary food for children of above 24 months till 36 months as “Formulated Supplement for Children” in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Eleventh Amendment Regulations, 2018. Formulated supplements for children shall be of appropriate nutritional quality to provide additional energy and nutrients to complement the family foods derived from the local produce by providing those nutrients that are either lacking or are present in insufficient quantities. Therefore, any food for the said age group should comply with the “Formulated Supplement for Children” standard.

It was also clarified that the Food Business Operators (FBOs) having license for “Proprietary Food” will not be allowed to use the licence under the category of “formulated supplements for children”. Further, the FBOs are directed to get the existing license modified before the renewal of the existing license. But now, FSSAI is receiving representations from FBOs requesting extension of time to modify their existing licence.

After due consideration, FSSAI decides to allow renewal of existing licence as proprietary licence till 30th June 2020 for one year. But FBOs have to modify their proprietary licence accordingly before next renewal to comply with the standards for formulated supplement for children.
