The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) vide a circular dated 18th October 2019 has issued a direction regarding standards of formulated supplements for children and issues of their license.
FSSAI previously specified the standards of complementary food for children of above 24 months till 36 months as “Formulated Supplement for Children” in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Eleventh Amendment Regulations, 2018. Formulated supplements for children shall be of appropriate nutritional quality to provide additional energy and nutrients to complement the family foods derived from the local produce by providing those nutrients that are either lacking or are present in insufficient quantities. These foods may be presented in any other age suitable food format. Therefore, any food for the said age group should comply with the “Formulated Supplement for Children” standard.
Vide this Notice, it is clarified that the Food Business Operators (FBOs) having license for “Proprietary Food” will not be allowed to use the licence under the category of “formulated supplements for children”. Further, the FBOs are directed to get the existing license modified before the renewal of the existing license.
